Kink in Your Neck

The most common cause is a muscle strain, soft tissue injury or misalignment of the vertebrae in your upper spine. These causes could be a result of:

  • Improper sleep position
  • Injury
  • Repetitive motion
  • Poor posture
  • Holding your neck in an abnormal position for an extended period of time
  • Your neck extending beyond its normal range of motion
  • Emotional stress

Your stiff neck may be causing other symptoms such as headaches, shoulder and upper back pain.

Help for a stiff neck

  • Rest – Avoid any activities that may cause further neck pain.
  • Self-massage – Try to identify the area on your neck or upper spine which is causing the pain. Gently massage the area for a few minutes.
  • Stretch – Use your hands to gently hold your head down and away from the source of the kink, then repeat on the opposite side. Also, stretch focusing on tensing and relaxing all the muscles in your neck, shoulders and upper back.
  • Ice it  – Apply ice to the affected area for 10 minutes and repeat every 20 minutes to help reduce swelling.

It’s a good idea to see your chiropractor if your neck pain:

  • Has lasted for days
  • Makes it difficult to turn your head to the side
  • Has occurred after an accident or injury
  • Results in numbness or tingling in your arms or hands
  • Is believed to be due to a more serious cause
