Is Your Family Active Enough?

Children need to stay active in the winter months Windsor Essex CountyWe all know that children follow the example set by their parents and this is the time of year it’s common for families to fall further into the easy and comforting habits of television watching and playing on smartphones, laptops and iPads. It’s already been a long, cold winter and maybe your family has lost interest in ‘winter activities’.

According to Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), children 5 – 11 years old should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity daily.

Including:

  • Vigorous-intensity activities at least 3 days per week.
  • Activities that strengthen muscle and bone at least 3 days per week.

Youths aged 12 – 17 years old should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity daily.

Including:

  • Vigorous-intensity activities at least 3 days per week.
  • Activities that strengthen muscle and bone at least 3 days per week.

Adults from 18-64 years old should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in sessions of 10 minutes or more.

It is also beneficial to add muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups, at least 2 days per week.

For all ages, the more physical activity, the greater health benefits.

Get out and get active!

  • Take advantage of public skating hours at your local arena or one the many area rivers and ponds
  • Pull on your snow boots or cross country skis and hit the Chrysler Greenway
  • Try sledding at one of the area’s parks or build a snow man
  • Host an outdoor winter picnic with games, a scavenger hunt and a bonfire
  • Take a walk on Windsor’s waterfront or down the Ganatchio Trail
  • Take the family bowling, to an indoor pool or Windsor’s Aquatic Centre, to play indoor mini golf, or try the new sport simulator facility in Oldcastle

There are so many ways to stay active in the winter and it’s important to your family’s health – so get out there, get active and enjoy!
