With the insertion of tiny needles into the dermis layer of the body at strategic locations, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system. When these nerves are stimulated, it sends ‘signals’ to the brain. The brain then ‘processes’ those signals and stimulates the release of many different and beneficial biochemicals, such as endorphins, enkephalins, GABA, serotonin and dopamine.
The part of the nervous system that acupuncture affects regulates visceral function. Visceral function means basically all things that are below the level of conscious control, such as heart rate, respiration, digestion and perspiration.
Stimulation of the endocrine system, specifically, the hypothalamus, helps regulate hormones and neurochemicals essential for maintaining the body’s ‘functional balance’ – including hunger, thirst. When the body is able to return to a balance, bodily functions, such as hormonal balance, liver and digestion function improve: which result in a reduction in cravings, an increase in metabolism and improved mood – just to name a few.
When food cravings decrease, bodily functions and mood improves, weight loss is likely to result – naturally.
