Many of us have goals to be healthier in the New Year. Often people fail to reach their healthy goals because the goals are unclear and the changes they implement are too drastic and unrealistic.
Here are some tips to help you make your healthy resolutions last throughout the year.
Forget about ‘weight’ and focus on how you want to feel
Instead of trying to reach a number on the scale, focus on how you want to feel. Do you want to feel stronger? Have more energy? Experience fewer headaches? Enjoy life with less pain? Feel comfortable in your clothes? Feel confident in a bathing suit?
Write down your goals and state them in the positive
A goal in your mind is just a dream, writing them down brings your goal to light.
Don’t just focus on the end result. Think in smaller steps. For instance, instead of saying, ‘I want to lose 30 pounds by the end of the year’ try, ‘in one month I will have the energy to ride my bike for 30 minutes straight.’
Make a plan to make your goal happen
As example – Week one: I will ride my bike for 12 minutes straight. Week two: I will ride my bike for 16 minutes straight – and break it down daily to make the goal a reality. Remember to review your goals daily to help keep you on track.
If your goal is weight loss related, extreme diets rarely work. Instead, make a written plan for yourself to eliminate one unhealthy food every week and add one healthy food in its place. As example – Week one: I will eliminate soda from my diet this week and add two glasses of water. Week two: I will eliminate potato chips from my diet and add two servings of vegetables.
Share your goals
When you share your specific goals with family or friends, you are being held accountable and are more likely to follow through. Working with someone who is also striving for a healthier lifestyle will provide you with the necessary support and encouragement to make your goal a reality.
Once you’ve attained your smaller weekly or monthly goals, keep yourself motivated and on track with a pre-planned reward system. Healthy, non-food related rewards can include: new songs on your workout playlist, an inspirational book, allowing yourself to sleep in, a massage, a luxurious bubble bath, new running shoes, a session with a personal trainer, a nutritionist, or something related to a healthy hobby that you enjoy will help keep you motivated.
